5 tips to take the pressure out of Home Schooling

I know we are all a bit stressed transitioning from Parent to Educator, while still Working. But when you think about it, this is actually an incredible opportunity to provide an Alternative Education for our kids - one that fits into our daily patterns, where we already have the teaching qualifications needed and is overall easier!

Here is how.

My Top 5 Alternative Education ideas:

‍

  1. Talk with our kids: We know that communication skills trumps academic knowledge, and the hundreds of conversation starters in KidCoachApp will develop these, along with lots of other related soft skills. More are added each month by the way (make sure you sign up here). Β πŸ‘‰ Great because – no preparation is required!
  2. Exercise daily: You know the benefits of this already, but finally have the time to implement. Some schools start with a β€œdaily mile” and so why not replicate with this daily 9am session from the BodyCoach Joe Wicks. It is also really important for you as parents to think about getting exercise and looking after your own wellbeing too πŸ‘‰ Great because – you can do it together!
  3. Cook dinner together: We can’t eat out so you will be cooking lots now anyway. Why not let the kids chop the veggies, stir the pan, whisk the eggs etc? Might be a bit slower but definitely keeps them occupied. With any luck they won’t be like this child 😜 Β  πŸ‘‰ Great because – you need to do this anyway!
  4. Get in touch with nature: Spring is coming and if you have a garden then it is a great chance to get outside and plant some flowers or grow some crops. Here is a good worksheet that gets kids thinking about gardening in a new way. Β  πŸ‘‰ Great because – kids get fresh air!
  5. Help the local community: There are vulnerable folks out there that we can be helping with food deliveries, phone check ins and random errands. NextDoor – the neighbourhood community app – has released a new feature where you can tell your neighbours you are in a position to help and so requests will get funnelled to you. πŸ‘‰ Great because – we teach kids to be social citizens and help each other out!

Let's use these ideas as part of our homeschooling practice!

‍

I think if we did we would all experience 3 key benefits:

‍

βœ”οΈ We will all look back with fonder memories – feeling that we made the best of a difficult time, that perhaps even it was a great time for family bonding

βœ”οΈ We will be more relaxed and less stressed – because we have immediately taken the pressure off, we can breathe deeply and smell the roses, with the realisation that we do not have to do it all

βœ”οΈ We will end up with more rounded kids – since they are taught that in times of emergency we prioritised what really matters – life and soft skills.

‍

OK, so a bit of Maths and English might be deprioritised for a few months. But how much difference will that truly make in the long term, compared to the life and soft skill development that we could instead highlight now?

‍

I hope this helps and feel free to share with other parents and colleagues. Make sure you are all signed up here to get your questions!
